shortsidedness of literal 1/13/16

Philosophy is like being in a dark room
and looking for a black cat . . .
(to comfort you with the wisdom
it imparts from purring.)

Metaphysics is like being in a dark room
and looking for a black cat that isn’t there . . .
(and know that to be true,
even though the impetus to keep looking
only becomes stronger and more intent.)

Theology is like being in a dark room
and looking for a black cat that isn’t there
and shouting you found it . . .
(because proving your worth to your audience at hand
is more important
than developing your contemplative methods of search
or deepening your version of what to look for
as relevance in your life.)

Science is like being in a dark room
and looking for a black cat using a fucking flashlight . . .
(to only find a black cat that ultimately proves to you
that science really works.)
